I went with my persons yesterday to Vegetorium at 124 Pasir Panjang Road to try Vegetorium.

It brought my person back to a nostalgic place, reminding her about the food she used to eat in school as a child.

Between all of us, we ordered Veggie Lover Soup, Rojak, Pumpkin Cake, Pig Trotters Claypot Rice, and two barley drinks. It came to about $11.50, but I think they might have forgotten to bill us for one item.

The food was tasty but contained MSG, and even though we had lots of water and barley to drink all day, we were still feeling parched at night.

The family that own the business are very friendly though.

Give the restaurant a visit if you are in the area, and request for no MSG.

One lunchtime, my friend Leona introduced me to Nutrihub at Cuppage Plaza. It’s an organic fusion vegan cafe with the Health Promotion Board’s Healthier Choice certification.

I really enjoyed the brown rice set of the day and decided to take B there later in the week.

This time, the brown rice set was not available and we ordered a bunch of different dishes including sushi rolls and soba noodles. We also had a glass of nutmilk.

To be frank, we found the food a little bland but agreed that it was indeed healthier than a vast majority of what cafes and restaurants offer.

I would highly recommend the brown rice set though, so order that if it is available!

Fantastic vegan food photography!

While at Food #03 yesterday, KK tells me about VeganYumYum, and how amazing the food photography is.

I was not disappointed, to say the least. I love it!

I know they have nothing much for vegetarians but went solely to honour my mother.

The experience would have been good if not for the casual service rendered by one of the service staff.

When called over to give recommendations on vegetarian dishes, she had a dismissive air about her. Dragging her feet over to our table, she wore an amused look on her face and said in a cynical tone to her colleagues that they didn’t have many vegetarian dishes.

No shit. Tell me what they are then.

My parents are not paying a premium for me to be on the receiving end of her crappy attitude, and I take no personal interest in her opinion outside of what I asked.

I was in no mood to entertain her behaviour so I didn’t make any effort to be cordial.

I think she knew and also overheard what I thought of her underwhelming service standards, I noticed that she was wearing a smelly face when I left.

My vegetarian meal was super pricey, $56 before tax for all of the below except for the dessert, which was part of my parent’s kaiseki meal.

I’m not coming back on my own or with friends. Maybe only if my parents insist on eating here for one of those family occasions. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen again.

Marketed as a health tonic, yet high in toxic mercury content, and usually bleached during production to give it a more desireable shade, Sharkfin doesn’t belong on anyone’s table this Chinese New Year, nor any wedding dinners for that matter. 

Methyl mercury is hazardous to humans, and exposure can result in an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as dementia. Some studies have suggested that sensitive individuals are susceptible to auto-immune effects. The Environmental Defense Fund recommends that men should eat shark once a month at most, and women and children should abstain entirely.

Indeed, a huge health risk for a piece of seafood that has no taste in itself.

I was at Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant on the weekend to lend my support to lovesharks, a committed group of, as the name suggests, shark lovers, who invited several people to sample the restaurant’s nine-course vegetarian Chinese New Year set meal, and especially, the vegetarian sharkfin soup.

While I am no fan of Chinese vegetarian food (especially at weddings) due to the abundance of mockmeat and starch, this menu was well-balanced with plenty of vegetables and even some fruit. Also, the texture was highly interesting and unlike other vegetarian food I’ve tried. Do give it a try! Or at least visit the restaurant to try their other dishes.

My favourites would be: Caltrops with Hairy Mushroom, Fresh Mushrooms with Asparagus, Osmanthus pudding with Xue Lian, and the Fragrant Rice Ball, which tastes just like Chicken Rice!

The Sharkfin Soup deserves a special mention also, for being the best vegetarian version I’ve ever tried to date.

I just got back from Tokyo and Hakone, with Lambchop, no less!

I thought that getting vegetarian food was going to be an uphill task but it was a lot more accessible than initially thought. The difficultly was mainly my two carnivorous parents, whose coattails I was riding to get there. So maybe I was the difficulty!

The food offered by ANA was a good kick off to my Japan food forage, a lot more tasty than Singapore Airlines, that’s for sure!

I will be updating this page shortly, with the sumptuous food I had while I was there.

In the later leg of the trip I met B in Tokyo, and those meals were mainly from vending machines and convenience stores! Quick and tasty, but not all that healthy.

Mushroom Sandwich and Earl Grey Lavender Tea from Cedele's

Today I went to Cedele’s Bakery Depot at Novena Square, and the service there never fails to surprise me.

For the exhorbitant price of $7 for a sandwich with nothing much in it, I’d at least expect decent service.

No service with a smile, no enthusiasm, no serviette. The skinny bespectacled guy is the worst.

The service added a distinctive bitter taste to the sandwich and I’m definitely never going back.

The Wheelock branch is heaps better!

Food #03 is serving up a vegan gingerbread man army and it’s worth checking out.

The homely restaurant is open through xmas and xmas eve so be sure to pop by for a taste of coziness!

There is a place I go for food and company at least once a week. If I have no plans on a Tuesday or Friday night, there is a good chance I will wind up at Food #03 in Little India munching on a Caesar Salad or one of their delicious pizzas.

It’s a vegetarian restaurant run by artists, who are always open to cooking food differently, and cater to the various taste preferences of vegetarians and vegans. The restaurant is also a supporter of various social causes, and for a while, Food not Bombs ran their operations from their kitchen. Food #03 is also keen to start a community kitchen and welcomes anyone with no capital to contact them to see how they can work together.

The takings from the restaurant mainly fund the museum next door, Post Museum, which has interesting exhibits from time to time. Currently, they are running Shopper/Hero, which encourages responsible shopping, with part proceeds going to sustainable developments or charities. This runs till December 21.

Check out the cosy joint at 109 Rowell Road. It is the last shophouse on that street.

Interesting people walk through the door all the time and you’ll never know who you’ll meet.
